Hazardous waste in Fredonia, NY:
Soil trafficability means how well we can walk or drive etc over the ground without it being “hurt” and able to grow crops. Fredonia’s soil is almost unusable which is another factor to explain why farming culture has exponentially decreased.
A chart from meteoblue.com pertaining Fredonia, New York's soil trafficability:
SOURCES
City-Data.com was a great resource to gather many years of information about Fredonia from. This was the source that informed us of the large amounts of hazardous waste in our small town. It is what led me to continue researching the health of our town, which inevitably led me to soil health and its trafficability.
Meteoblue was another great resource in collecting information about Fredonia's overall climate change, its soil health, and even air quality and temperature changes. It was one of the most important sources of information for this project. Finding out that Fredonia's Soil health was in real danger of being unable to grow anything, let alone crops, was our main interest and inspiration to help the health of the soil improve and grow produce again and bring the dwindling farming community back.
NASS Quick Stats was the last source I came across in which it was shown statistically how much vegetable agriculture production in Fredonia was happening specifically in 2007 and 2017, a perfect 10 year difference. Doing quick math between the numbers shown on each result, it was shown that the overall production of vegetables had decreased about 66% in that 10 year difference. We knew we had to help bring agriculture and farming back to our town, and since the soil seemed to be the main issue, that's what we decided to focus on. All of this led us to community composting.
